Sagittarius Season
Sagittarius season is the time of the year when the harvests abound and we celebrate the fruits of the Earth. For our ancestors this was the time when the grape harvest has been turned to wine, grains have been ground and distributed to the community, and the herd has been culled; serving a dual purpose of providing an abundance of preserved meat that can be used during the winter while also decreasing the resources that would be necessary to carry the herd through the cold season. But those worries are for another season, here and now we are untroubled by the lean times to come.
Sagittarius is known for curiosity, playfulness, and desire for exploration. To a young Sagittarian their world feels small. They know that there is something bigger, greater out there, and so they set off to find it. The area of life we will explore and seek broader horizons is indicated by the house Sagittarius falls in. Sagittarian dominants are naturally adventurous and philosophical. They see challenges as opportunities, do not welcome restrictions, and will often pursue freedom however available when they feel imposed.
Lives in the 9th House
The ninth house is the house of higher education and advanced learning, and indicates the type of exploration that brings you outside of your familiar neighborhood. Curiosity about the unknown pushes Sagittarians to travel and meet people of varied belief systems and ways of life. This is the sister sign of Gemini, where we find thought patterns that develop during childhood, and so the knowledge of Sagittarius is that which must be learned from or through those outside of an individual's trodden grounds.
Ruled by Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and rules expansion, opportunity, and luck; and by extension rules gambling and the stock market. The Romans considered Jupiter the deity of treaties, alliances, and oaths responsible for building a network of ideas and trade, but also the lighting bolt that could bring things crashing down in an instant. Sagittarius is ruled by the direct expression of Jupiter and, like in Pisces, the planet brings an inherent connection to the spiritual. Sagittarian dominants seek meaning in life greater than themselves and find personal fulfillment by exploring spiritual pathways outside of the one they are born into.
Modality and Element - Mutable Fire
Sagittarians are charismatic and their naturally joyful nature can be an inspiration to others but this sign is also the most connected to religion and dogma. Sagittarius’ passion driven search for enlightenment can lead those of a Sagittarian nature to get caught up in the type of spiritual belief systems that convert and align the masses. This is the flame that drives mass behavior which at the slightest whim can change direction and destroy all in its path, and so Sagittarius season leads us to the darkest night of the year. Just as illumination leads to the proverbial dark night of the soul.
Tarot - Temperance (RWS)/Art (Thoth)
The Temperance card was re-named Art in the Thoth deck to indicate the Art of Alchemy, but both cards carry the same meaning and the same association to Sagittarius. There is a balancing that takes place to integrate opposites, highlighting a need to stay grounded in our passions but open to flux. While Sagittarius is not often connected to balance, this is the key to unleashing the unrestricted blessings available in the sign. Tempering is the process of perfecting with fire and water, a physical process where typically opposing energies work together to strengthen a physical vessel.
