The Moon in Cycle

The Moon is the swiftest moving planet in astrology, taking roughly 28 days to completely transit the zodiac and about 29.5 days in the synodic month marked by each new moon. During this time the Moon spends about 2.5 days in each sign and triggers every other placement on the chart. This translates into the volatile nature of the planet connected with emotional and reactionary responses but also offers the opportunity for us to adapt to the changing nature of the world and integrate what is happening around us.

Each moon cycle is marked by the new moon conjunction, full moon opposition, and two quarter moon squares between the Sun and the Moon. The Sun is connected with ego and self expression, quite literally representing the light that we shine on the world, while the Moon deals with our unconscious and instinctual responses. Each moon cycle integrates our experience with the Sun as it transits each sign, and the modalities and elements that are being triggered by the cycle give us insight into what is collectively being assimilated between the conscious and the subconscious.

Virgo Moon Cycle

This synodic month begins with the Sun-Moon conjunction in Virgo. Virgo is associated with our routines and the small scale plans that define the daily experience and how that translates into our physical lives. In this way Virgo is associated with health maintenance and the management of chronic medical issues. It is also associated with the nitty gritty of what we do daily for our job along with the routine cleaning and management of our homes. With this new moon we are tasked with looking at the details and determining how to rearrange them so that our daily routine can bring the best physical outcome.

The Sun-Moon new conjunction, first quarter square, and full moon opposition fall in mutable signs so this part of the cycle will be defined by the triggerings of change. The mutable phase sees the breaking down of the season as the fixedness of nature has passed and change is in the air. Once we hit the third quarter square and dark moon the Sun and Moon will be dancing through cardinal signs, bringing activation to what is being meticulously planned in the mutable energy of the first portion of this cycle.

Since the Sun is shining from an earth sign we know that this planning is manifesting in the physical realm and in Virgo this is impacting our daily experience. The Virgo Sun may shine a light on the physical manifestations of our routine and how that really impacts our lives. By the time we hit the full moon opposition with the Moon in Pisces the relationship between these sister signs brings things to a head. Does the great unknown spark fear or does it inspire creative dreams of what could be? Once we hit the dark moon in Libra we will be ready for a release and following renewal in our one on one relationships and the ways that we connect and communicate intimately.

  • New Moon in Virgo at 11° - loose opposition to Pisces Saturn rx
  • Leo Mercury trine Aries Chiron rx
  • Gemini Mars square Pisces Neptune rx

The new moon in Virgo makes a loose opposition to Saturn retrograde in Pisces. The Pisces opposition offers a glimpse of what will be coming to a head on the full moon while Saturn's influence brings restriction and discipline. Since Saturn is retrograde this is felt internally while the opposition to the Sun-Moon complex means that this restriction is not coming from us and will feel in opposition to what it is that we desire. Pisces’ realm is the unknowable and the untouchable and Saturn’s disciple does not come natural to its ethereal nature.

Mercury is the ruler of the Virgo new moon so its trine to Chiron in Aries is particularly poignant. Chiron activates our unhealable wounds, which typically have a generational aspect. However, the asteroid also offers a way to bring healing to others through the pain we have experienced. Unfortunately a shadow aspect of Chiron is the perpetuation of these traumas on others. Since this is a fire trine things are volatile. Practice self awareness to bring healing instead of trauma.

Mars in Gemini makes a mutable square with Neptune retrograde in Pisces. Neptune’s influence is never direct, often obscured, and always hides under various veils, all of which is heightened by the Piscean influence. Since the planet is retrograde this is internalized. Mars influence is always an activation, stimulated through passion and aggression, but this influence is coming through Gemini which is in many ways a personal sign. How we communicate and express our passions is in tension with the dreams and fears that seed future change.
